(15mins) This is the BBC report at the time of the Tsunami:
<<<WARNING>>>> This video clip covers the events around the devastating Boxing Day Tsunami. I have chosen a BBC News clip, to make sure it is a reliable and responsible account. The death toll from this Tsunami was around 250,000 people around the edge of the Indian Ocean. It is only 15mins long, but be prepared for the harrowing content of the issue.
(30mins) This is the BBC Panorama report about the 2011 Japan Tsunami. It shows the impact a tsunami can have on a developed country with good infrastructure, like we have in New Zealand. Although is the event was devastating with around 10,000 lives claimed, there were miraculous tales of survival too. This report covers some of those and gives an account of the events that day. [I have chosen a BBC News clip, to make sure it is a reliable and responsible account.]
The Greatest Little Town in the World
Use Google Earth to create a map of important places in Katikati.
Your map should use ‘Pins’ in separate folders to locate the following:
4 Important buildings
4 ‘Important’ shops
4 Interesting landmarks
Use the ‘Path’ tool to show the main road through town
Use the ‘Polygon’ tool to show the entire Katikati School Grounds
Bonus tasks (for super excellent people)
1. Find out how far it is to walk from the school office to the Subway in town.
2. Work out how to put a photo into a ‘Pins’ description bubble
3. Use the ‘History’ tool to find a part of town that has changed significantly. Create a ‘description bubble’ that explains the changes - perhaps with an embedded image)
